The health benefits of tomatoes are self-explanatory. The red fruit/vegetable is a gastronomic ingredient used in various dishes. Tomatoes are also used in cosmetic procedures and tan removal during the summer. They are also lauded for their high antioxidant content and ability to safeguard us against harmful Ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Tomatoes are a staple food throughout the world. But did you know that tomatoes have specific unavoidable side effects? Here are some of the reasons why doctors warn us against consuming too many tomatoes:
Tomatoes contain malic acid and citric acid, which cause your stomach to become excessively acidic. Consuming an excessive amount of tomatoes can result in heartburn or acid reflux due to excess gastric acid production in the stomach. Tomatoes may also aggravate GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) symptoms. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends avoiding acidic foods such as tomatoes to avoid acid reflux symptoms.
It may come as a surprise, but consuming too many tomatoes can lead to kidney stones in the body. This is because tomatoes are high in calcium and oxalate, which are not easily digested or removed from the body when in excess. These elements begin to accumulate in the body, forming kidney stones.
Excessive tomato consumption can cause joint swelling and pain. This is because of the presence of an alkaloid known as solanine. This compound is responsible for calcium buildup in the tissues, which causes inflammation.
In most cases, Lycopene is not harmful. However, lycopene vitamins may not be safe to take during pregnancy. Lycopene can also worsen prostate cancer symptoms. Patients with gastric problems should use Lycopene with caution. Moreover, Lycopene can also cause low blood pressure. Those who are under blood pressure medication should avoid Lycopene.
Lycopene can also elevate the danger of hemorrhaging during pregnancy and people who suffer from bleeding disorders should avoid them. Lycopene has also been shown to interact with some cancer chemotherapy agents. As a result, cancer patients must exercise extreme caution.
While nutritionists and doctors alike praise tomatoes for their skin benefits, eating too many of them may be harmful to your skin. Overconsumption of Tomato may result in Lycopenodermia, a condition caused by an excess of Lycopene in the blood. Your skin may appear washed-out and dull as a result of this. Lycopene is a good antioxidant in tomatoes, but you should limit its intake to 75 mg per day.
Histamine, a compound found in tomatoes, causes allergic reactions. Allergy symptoms such as skin problems, wheezing, sniffling, and throat itching may appear immediately after consumption. Tomatoes can also cause dermatitis, a condition in which your skin becomes highly scratchy and swollen after coming into contact with the fruit. Tomatoes can also cause itchiness on the lips. Another tomato-related allergic reaction is a red spot around the brows and eyelids.
With their pesky skins and seeds, Tomatoes could be one of the causes of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Tomatoes are also one of the most common dietary allergens that can cause digestive issues. Being acidic in nature, Tomatoes can aggravate the bladder and cause urinary incontinence.
Tomatoes can also cause urinary ailments and, in some cases, cystitis (bladder burning). Diarrhea can arise in people who are allergic to tomatoes. Tomatoes can also cause bloating if you already have IBS. According to a report published by Longwood University, Tomatoes are greasy and acidic and should be avoided during diarrhea. According to another report from the University of Minnesota, tomatoes may also be a source of salmonella, an organism that causes diarrhea.
After reading this, don’t cancel your plans to make that delicious tomato pasta! It is perfectly acceptable to garner the antioxidant benefits of tomatoes by trying to cook with them. It’s also a good idea to use them peripherally to remove tans. However, if you’re overdoing it, you should probably introspect on your tomato usage.
