NASA’s associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate, Thomas Zurbuchen, believes this image marks a turning point in human knowledge of the universe. About 13 billion years ago, some of these objects produced the first light.
The photograph provides a peek at the universe from 13 billion years ago. What Hubble had thought were blips are now seen by Webb as galaxies. The fact that light travels through space and takes time makes telescopes essentially time machines.
Therefore, light from faraway galaxies reaches the Webb telescope, providing information about billions of years ago. Scientists say the James Webb Space Telescope may help solve puzzles dating back to 100 million years after the Big Bang. As opposed to visible-light telescopes such as Hubble, Webb uses its infrared eyes to observe distant stars and galaxies.
NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency created the James Webb Space Telescope. Scientists will use the observatory, about the size of a tennis court, to study the Big Bang’s first moments and the universe’s origin.
