We all want to have fresh vegetables and fruits daily. When we go grocery shopping, we lookout for good and fresh grocery items and make sure they are perfect. We do not purchase groceries that are not good, especially when they tend to be overripe.
Some people feel that storing the produce in the fridge keeps them clean and fresh. However, dumping the produce in the refrigerator is not everything because we need to ensure whether they are stored at a suitable temperature and which of the produce lasts longer.
Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, romaine, and other types of lettuce will remain fresher and last longer once you rinse them in cool water before refrigerating them. Remove the unwanted leaves, dry the greens in a salad spinner and wrap them closely in paper towels. Then seal them in a plastic bag or container.
Many fruits and vegetables, particularly those grown in hot climates, have a natural waxy exterior layer to prevent shrinkage. However, some crops are coated with an artificial wax layer. This prevents them from staining and decomposing. Wash it thoroughly before eating.
The green leaves on the carrot might be good, but they are not suitable as nutrients or freshness of the carrot. Remove the green leaves before storing the carrot in the refrigerator. It is better to place them in a plastic bag in the drawer for several weeks. This keeps them fresh. And the green leaves can be used for making pesto, chimichurri, or salad topping.
Bananas have to be kept in a cool place and not in the sunlight because the humidity of the sun can make the bananas brown. It has to be kept away from other fruits and vegetables. Once they are ripened, refrigerate the bananas to extend their shelf life for a few days. The skin can become spotted, but the inside will still be tasty.
The savory flavor of fresh ginger is good, but it is better to use them before it turns gnarly or stale. It can last in the refrigerator for a few weeks. But toss it in a freezer and it can be fresh for almost three months. You need to chop or slice the ginger and then wrap it with foil or a freezer bag to keep it out of the air.
Onions have to be stored in a cool and dry place but not in plastic bags. Good airflow is essential to maintain the decay from a distance. You can hang it on a hook in your pantry. If there are any chopped onions, you can keep them for several days in the refrigerator.
Some fruits have to be kept at room temperature, 40⁰F like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Strawberries are among the sweetest fruits of the summer, but truthfully, they have to be kept in a cold place. It can cause them to have a longer shelf life, and it is better to wash the berries at the last minute before consuming them.
Celery is almost a water-like vegetable. It is susceptible to ethylene and gets ripened very fast. You can prevent celery from getting floppy by covering tightly in a foil or storing it in the crisper drawer. Otherwise, try wrapping it up in a dry paper towel and put it in a plastic sleeve which can last for several weeks.
Lemons are vital for every use at home or in your kitchen. But some of the lemons do not last long if you have not sealed them tightly in a plastic storage bag and put them in the fridge.
Herbs have their method for storing in a fridge to ensure it is gentle and fresh for use. If your spices are very dirty, wash them first and then dry them in a salad spinner. Now bundle the dry herbs in a dry paper towel and place them in a resealable plastic bag or a plastic container, but keep them vertical.
Mushrooms are not fruit or vegetable but fungi. Mushrooms are better to be kept in a cool and ventilated place. It is better not to wash this and can be preserved in a brown paper bag in a dry and cool area in the fridge. Free the mushrooms from their plastic-wrapped grocery container, which can trap moisture.
Several things can spoil your food, including light, air, temperature, and time. It is better to avoid too much food on the shelves and drawers so that air can circulate. You can control microorganisms like bacteria, mold, and yeast by wiping down your refrigerator regularly.
It is better to give space for every item in the refrigerator to have some air to breathe. It can help the fridge to work more efficiently with some air circulating the groceries to produce freshness.
