DIY
There was once a time when we couldn’t wear the same outfit twice without getting judgmental looks. However, nowadays, the trend is to reuse and save the planet. Trying to make the most out of what we have could not be more current, with more of us seeking to reduce waste and spend less cash. This is how the pros do it.
The bra is exposed by the jumpsuit that occasionally pops open, the T-shirt with the strangely unstable hem, among others. But it’s not all inherently bad. A rising trend in mending and repurposing – as evidenced by the emergence of alterations businesses – may be able to breathe new life into such unwanted garments.
Making the most of what we have could not be more relevant today. Many charity shops fill, and more of us wish to reduce waste, spend less money, and keep our clothing for longer. And to reinvent your wardrobe, you don’t need to have professional sewing abilities. Still, you will need some time and thought.
This period at home has resulted in a whole DIY renaissance. We’ve never seen such an invasion of homemade bread, freshly woven baskets, and self-hair-trimming on our feeds.
Fashion is adamant about not being left out of this revolution, and for a good cause! There are many ways to transform an existing piece in your closet with just a little effort and minimal effort. It’s like going to the next level with your wardrobe shopping.
Fashionistas these days have begun to upcycle and customize thrift store items along with their clothing that they feel would look better. With a few basic sewing abilities, you can change your wardrobe around. Many have claimed that the elastic cuffing is simple and can alter any wide-legged pants, from jogging bottoms to jumpsuits, as long as the fabric is “flimsy” enough to take the new shape.
There are numerous YouTube videos available, but the simplest method is to cut a small hole in the seam of an existing hem, feed the elastic through with a safety pin on the loose end, knot the elastic, and sew the opening closed.
When one girls’ dad passed away from cancer, she came up with an ingenious idea to repurpose his clothes. She decided to make a top out of one of his shirts, which had a low neck and a front knot. Men’s shirts are now reworked as a fashion statement. Be proactive concerning low-waste fashion, and office shirts are an excellent candidate for recyclability.
First, because the cotton has already been produced and is a lovely material, second, since they are one of the most difficult items to sell in thrift stores, provided that several office workers prefer a crisp look and would only buy new. A shirt can be transformed into a plain top or a dress with frills and pleats.
If you have a closet full of dresses that would have been perfect if they just had alternative sleeves or jumpsuits with beautiful necklines but droopy bottoms, try reusing them with the half you prefer.
Combines two garments, for example, sewing the top of one dress to the skirt of the other, which is an alteration, especially if the skirt has a built-in waistline. Slicing apart a dress to produce a skirt or top is an easier variation of this style hack.
Upcycling denim has proved to be a huge trend. Many artists are experimenting with contrasting denim that can inspire you. Denim techniques include everything from basic tapering to slimming wide-legged jeans to more complex upcycling, such as adding different denim panels to denim jackets.
You can try visible mending by adding patches and closing holes with embroidery or hand-stitching. You can easily cut the bottom of some trousers or even the collar of a denim jacket if you’re daring and know what you want – and you enjoy the rugged look.
Tie-dye was nearly as much a part of the lockdown lifestyle as homemade bread and stress, and it’s a great way to spruce up old cotton T-shirts and socks. If you want to limit the environmental impact of your wardrobe, you should avoid commercial colors, which include harsh chemicals. Tie-dye has been around for years and is always a hippie favorite. You can try to make themed tie-dye outfits for the festivities.
DIY’s are fun and always about your creativity. There is no right or wrong. It is all about you and how you express yourself with what you wear. The styles are endless with the rise in thrifting and recycling and multiple ways to fix your outfits. A few of these ideas might help you try to alter your clothes and add a bit of your touch to them.
