But Japan isn’t the only city that has forbidden eating on the streets. There are similar restrictions in some parts of Italy. In the city center of Florence, Italy, there are four streets – Via de’ Neri, Piazzale Degli Uffizi, Piazza del Grano, and Via Della Ninna – where people eat on the sidewalks, roadways, and doors.
While Kamakura’s new policy is more a request than a law, Italy has consequences. Since September 2018, anyone eating meals outside at peak hours in four central streets in Florence might get a fine of up to €500 ($578).
Eating on the streets is also illegal in some places of Rome, including the tourist hotspot of the Spanish Steps. They implemented the policy to discourage people from blocking doorways and walkways while snacking, making the city more difficult to navigate for others.
