Mr. Depp’s legal fortunes have changed dramatically due to Wednesday’s decision. After the Sun, a British tabloid, he lost a libel case in the United Kingdom two years ago, dubbed him a “wife-beater.”
Ms. Heard’s experience as a “public figure representing domestic abuse” was described in a 2018 opinion article in the Washington Post, which became the US sequel to their legal battle. She didn’t name her ex-husband or any of the other alleged perpetrators.
Mr. Depp, who was once one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, said the ramifications had put his career on hold. He sued for $50 million, and she countersued for $100 million. Although both parties live in California, the case was heard in Virginia county, where the Washington Post’s printing machines are located.
