Kano Jigoro initially founded Kodokan Judo to strengthen his fragile body as a child by learning Jujutsu*. He came across jujitsu as an excellent form of physical training. Seeing this as an opportunity for self-defense, Kano opted to learn the art.
Kano studied both Tenjin Shinyo-Ryu and Kito-Ryu styles of traditional Jujutsu, ultimately mastering its most profound teachings, and reinforced his study with a keen interest in other martial arts. Judo, which means “gentle way,” was created when Kano eliminated the more hazardous tactics of jiujitsu.
